The session brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including environmental experts, heads of civil society organizations, and specialized journalists. The primary objective of the gathering was to facilitate a multi-stakeholder dialogue on environmental issues and the impacts of climate change. These discussions aimed to identify key priorities for integration into the Ministry of Environment’s official agenda and future strategic roadmaps.
During the meeting, IRO Organization—represented by its president, Namo Majeed—raised several critical issues requiring urgent ministerial oversight and intervention. These included:
- Fuel Quality and Public Health: Concerns regarding the presence of hazardous substances in vehicle fuel resulting from substandard refining processes, which pose a direct threat to urban air quality and public health.
- Chemical Safety and Agricultural Regulation: The alarming importation of prohibited agricultural pesticides into Iraq, which present severe risks to the ecosystem and human health.
Furthermore, IRO representative advocated for the robust activation and implementation of the international and domestic frameworks to which Iraq is a signatory. The organization emphasized the necessity of meeting commitments under:
- The Paris Agreement on climate change.
- The National Adaptation Plan (NAP).
- The Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).
- National Communications on climate change.
- The National Biodiversity Strategy.
- Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) targets.
