Environmental Journalism Training Empowers Journalists in the KRI

An interactive Environmental Journalism course has been designed in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), bringing together journalists to strengthen their reporting skills on pressing environmental issues.

The course, developed as a collaboration initiative of IRO Organization, Jasana Organization, and Spee Media, aiming at enhancing journalists’ capacity to cover environmental challenges in a professional, ethical, and engaging manner.

Participants explore the history and importance of environmental journalism, including global milestones such as Silent Spring by Rachel Carson, and discuss the growing relevance of environmental reporting in Iraq and the KRI. The training addresses key issues including climate change, pollution, biodiversity loss, and waste management, while also highlighting challenges faced by environmental reporters.

A strong focus is placed on digital storytelling, social media engagement, multimedia tools, podcasting and data visualization to help journalists communicate complex environmental topics in accessible and impactful ways.

Through group work and practical exercises, participants develop story ideas relevant to local communities. The initiative represents an important step toward strengthening environmental awareness and accountability through responsible journalism in the region.
